Good morning all,
This ground is playing havoc with trying to have a bet at the moment. Yesterday I went to Pontefract with the intention of playing soft/heavy ground specialists in ind but in truth the ground wasn't that bad – yes, it was on the soft side but not desperate by any means and anyone (like me) that was playing the plodders found themselves on the wrong side of things.
It's the same today – Sandown are heavy/soft which makes a few of the favourites look quite attractive, but I think after yesterday I'm approaching it with a bit more caution!
There's a couple I like there, if you fancy chancing your arm, one at a price, and they are both on the main piece.
The Sandown card kicks off with an amateur's event at 5.35. I don't mind these events, I know plenty won't go near them with a barge pole and I understand why – you can be on the best horse but the worst pilot, and bad rides are frequent – but there's often a bit of value in them if you're prepared to pick and choose your targets.
Heavy ground here points towards two of them – Unison and Top Diktat. Both have their interesting points. Unison is very in-and-out but Emma Sayer travels an awful long way to take one ride. Emma plies her trade in the North, for those unaware, and apart from one ride at Ascot, I'm struggling to find any time she's ridden this far South (jumps or Flat) in the last five years. I like Emma a lot as a rider and I'm taking the hint here.
Top Diktat likes this ground and is on a very good mark on the best of his form, but the fact he lacks a recent run is a bit offputting. As is the fact that Becky Smith hasn't ridden a winner yet, but she has been placed a couple of times and she'll surely break her duck sooner rather than later. Some concerns then, but the 14-1 available is worth a small saver.
I'll be quite interested to see how Cunco's half-brother Cassini gets on in the 6.45 but in this ground, can't be a bet. But both the last couple of favourirtes on the card make some appeal – Frank Bridge is an improving sort that won here as easy as you like last week, and I don't think that stepping back in trip a furlong will prove a stumbling block, and Wealth Tax couldn't have won any easier in heavy ground at Nottingham last week and this is no more difficult. If you like a short one, he'd be the one I'd be interested in tonight.
Today's selection – Unison 5.35 Sandown
Good luck with all your bets today,
