Good morning all,
We'll kick the week off with a crack at the 10k Colossus pool at Huntingdon today, given I have done the card for the Life, and it is where I'll be working later on! Thoughts are on the main piece and the Colossuses will go up around 10am.
12.40 – Novice Hurdle
Tempting to just throw Now Children in, as he’s the best of these on the Flat and have done with, but he’s not jumped a hurdle in public as yet and as such, I might throw another in. Rock On Tiger hasn’t jumped a flight either but Henry Daly has his team in good nick and he was promising in two bumpers last season.
1.10 – Novice Handicap Chase
Here’s a favourite I don’t like in the shape of Blue N Yellow, a horse I’ve never been in love with and I’m a little surprised he’s as short as he is. I’ve seen him jack it in too many times to trust him here, and I’ll be looking to get him out of the frame.
Snowy Oscar has been on my radar for some time as one to follow once he gets a fence, and he goes in on his chase debut. Land League is consistent and didn’t stay three miles last time – back at 2m4f, he’ll be happier and should be thereabouts. I might throw in Discko Des Plages as well if there’s a bit of money around for him, he’s got loads of scope for fences but might need this, and similar comments apply to Sandford Castle.
1.40 – Handicap Hurdle
Sebastopol misses the Greatwood Hurdle (ground will be too soft, says trainer) to take this in instead, and punters have taken the hint – he’s been backed to the exclusion of everything else. It’s one of these races where we’ll have to have him in but equally have a couple more and hope he doesn’t run his race.
Highly Prized is improving and should have plenty more in the locker, so he goes in, and at a huge price (and as long as the rain stays away) so too does Havana Hermano, who I thought ran well considering the ground went against him at Cheltenham and will have things more in his favour here.
2.10 – Handicap Chase
I think this is an easier leg – famous last words – as there’s three I don’t like for varying reasons – Dandridge at the 3m trip, Valadom as he normally needs a run after a break and Water Wagtail as he’s not very good. Ultimatum Du Roy would be my first pick as he does go well after a break and Alex Hales continues to have a good autumn, and I can see Fr Humphrey reversing Kempton with Vendredi Trois, so he’s my other pick.
2.40 – Handicap Hurdle
The first (and weaker) division of the handicap hurdle, and how many of these can you trust? Not many is the answer. Top of the rogues gallery is Dan Gun, who is always well backed and always disappoints. Have to try and get him beat again. Armattiekan is no star but looks more likely to run his race than a few and goes in. Jessica Rabbit might be happier back on better ground and she might have a bit of improvement to come – I’m surprised she’s a double figure price, I’d have her third or fourth in and think she’s a chance. Scottsdale has a squeak if he jumps better and at a whopping price Catlin isn't without some hope either.
3.10 – Handicap Hurdle
Sadly the market has found Methag, I was hoping she’d be a bigger price than she is as she looks the most likely winner, especially if any more rain does fall. Her Flat form entitles her to be favourite and she’s my number one pick. For the back up I’ll have Arcadian Sea, who finds winning hard but tends to run his race more often than not and wasn’t beaten far here last time. I may yet have a third when I have another look.
Today’s selection – Ultimatum Du Roy 2.10 Huntingdon
Good luck with all your bets today,
David.
Blimey. Wrong one 🙁 I only had one other bet today. Beaten by a mere 49 lengths. Bedtime I reckon.
