It’s A Big ‘Un From Wigan!

Good morning all,

“It's A Big Un From Wigan!” was a phrase an old work colleague used to come out with during my HMV days whenever he played a couple of his beloved Northern Soul classics. It was usually followed by “the great days are back again!”, at which point he would go into his own little world for ten minutes, transported back to a golden age, presumably.

Anyway, with some big fields around today, there's a few big ‘uns I like, from a price perspective anyway. Here goes…

2.18 Doncaster – 2m5f Novice Hurdle

This looks quite a good race for the money but a few of these are now on recovery missions, and with hot favourite Danny Kirwan not seen out for some time, the places (at least) could be up for grabs.

With that, the 25s and bigger Ulverston looks a fair shout. Travelled well here last time and looked the winner for a bit until the short-priced favourite kicked in the gears late to win. Fully proven under conditions then, and if he can take another step up, can get among the big guns.

2.50 Doncaster – 3m Handicap

Be no surprise if River Arrow took this, for all the reasons I outlined on Saturday's Preview before she was taken out of her intended target, and Tom Symonds horses are pretty much running to their marks at present, so she has plenty going for her.

I've also got I'm A Starman on a tracker after his third to McNamaras Band at Chepstow last year, a decent piece of form, and the Warwick maiden hurdle he also ran third in on his next start has worked out even better, with the winner, fourth, fifth and sixth all winners since. There's definitely a race in him too, and even if it isn't this one, he does need watching carefully this spring.

3.23 Doncaster – 2m Novice Hurdle

Allart ought to be winning this with ease but second in Youracert has some questions to answer – ground (win at Rasen came on quicker ground), absence since last August and the fact the four McCain horses ran like drains at Musselburgh yesterday despite the fact none of them went off bigger than 7s. So it's ripe for an e/w bet against the jolly, and at 125s in a couple of places I can't resist a quid e/w on Annebelle, who definitely has a bit of ability and although she'll probably be after a mark, that is balanced out by her price being too big here. That bumper she tried her hand in at Aintree last year is working out really well, and although she was last, she wasn't totally thrashed out of sight. A nice intro to hurdles at Wetherby at the beginning of the month wasn't without hope either.
