BookmakersActing the bookmaker is a favourite activity of a lot of bettors these days.

Today I want to share three ways that people go about laying horses along with our thoughts on each.

1. Lay the outsiders.  A lot of people, especially new layers, have the mentality that it's ok to lay the outsiders because they never win. They can go on for weeks happy with their strategy until one day they hit the winner.

We had one of these on Monday when the 200/1 shot Lights of Broadway won at Taunton. This horse had a Betfair SP of 810.48. If you had layed that at the £2 minimum stake your loss would have been over £1600.

If you are laying outsiders make sure you have the bank to cope with the winners when they come. It's not un common to get two big priced winners on the same day.

Anybody who layed this one needs another 800 losers to get back to level!

2. Lay horses that are backed heavily. This goes against the grain for some bettors because they think that if a horse is steaming in that it's because somebody knows something and it will definitely win.

Somebody might know something, but there are no definites. And when a horse steams in price the value is disappearing with every price movement.

We had an example of this in the very same race Pyleigh Lass. This one opened at 3/1 on the course and was bet into 15/8 favourite. It had a Betfair SP of 3.0 and it was never shorter than that in running.

If you watch the markets and form an opinion of what prices the market leaders should be before the on course betting opens and then lay anything that starts much shorter than you predicted you can make consistent profits.

It's not a hard skill to learn and is doable by anybody who has the afternoon available to watch the markets.

3. Follow a System. The third option for those that don't have the time for number 2 is to get a system that will find the horses to lay for you.

One that we have had great success with is the Profitable Lays service. Over the last 40 days to £10 stakes this system has made a profit of just over £500.

In summary don't lay the outsiders unless you really know what you are doing. If you have the time learn how to spot the bad value market leaders and lay them. If you don't have the time for that we recommend the Profitable Lays System
