Newmarket and York

Good morning all,

No good yesterday, although some faith in Konchek has been restored, so we push on to day 2 of Newmarket, and I have thrown one in at York for good measure. York is where I'll be for the next couple of days, very much looking forward to working there, it is a lovely course.

Declarations all in for Saturday now and both Thundering Blue and Brorocco have fared okay in the draw for the John Smiths. Good news!

Newmarket

2.25 – Duchess Of Cambridge

Think the market has this about right – you all know I’m a fan of Main Edition and was with her at Ascot, and this track will arguably play to her strengths even more. But at 5-2 I’m happy to let her win without my money on, it’s the right price rather than overpriced.

If there’s any value left in the race, then Pretty Pollyanna may be it. She’s got ground to make up on Main Edition on her Albany run, but she was left with a lot of ground to make up there. She should improve again and this track should suit her too. 11-1 looks fair enough if you’re looking for an e/w play in the race.

3.00 – 1m2f Handicap

There’s not much between Wissahickon and Beringer on their York running where the latter travelled best but got worried out of it when push came to shove in the final furlong. If they decide to challenge wider with Beringer this time, and not get in a scrap, he’s not without some hope of reversing that form.

I shall row in with the improving Chief Ironside, who won nicely over C&D last time and in doing so, proved he doesn’t actually need to lead to win. He was nicely on top at the finish there and a 7lb rise is fully deserved. Looks a point overpriced at Paddy’s 7-1 and I’ll have a bet at that.

4.45 – 1m6f Handicap

Hamada looks the one to beat here, given he’s returned from an absence in very good form and has conditions to suit, which might not be the case for Elgin, who might be happier with a drop of rain (looks unlikely at this stage). Must be a chance that, in a field of hold-up horses, they simply dictate the pace with Hamada and if that’s the case, then he might take some passing.

My old friend Fire Jet Takes his chance over his favourite C&D and he could squeeze himself into the frame. He’s game and genuine and this mark probably isn’t beyond him.

York

3.15 – Summer Stakes

This looks a match on paper at present, although there could be a bit more to come from Worship, but I do like the chances of Could It Be Love here. Her form entitles her to be clear favorite – beaten less than 2l by Alpha Centauri three runs back – and she’s definitely worth a try back at sprint trips, having not got home on her last couple of starts. Pretty Baby was impressive at Nottingham but she will need to improve again – which is likely, I will grant you, although not a given – but the proven ability of Could It Be Love will do for me.

Today's selection – Chief Ironside 3.00 Newmarket

Good luck with all your bets today,

David.
