Nottingham – Slow Going

Good morning all,

Off to Nottingham today, which I'll report back on tomorrow, and better still, I've done the card for the Sporting Life website too. That means having a crack at the Nottingham Colossus too, which has a 6k rollover pot to start off with. I am quite busy this morning but I'll put them up around 12. My potted thoughts on the card are on the piece, but feel free to go to the Life website if you want a full lowdown.

1.25 – Novice Stakes

Asmund is favourite and ran well on debut on soft ground, so it’s not hard to see him going well, but there are plenty of alternatives and this might be an early favourite to try and take on. Moosmee is the obvious one after a good debut effort (on soft) and he should come on, and Brazen Point came from that really good Carlisle maiden that’s working out well. He improved at Pontefract last time too, and looks a lively outsider.

1.55 – Fillies Handicap

Nasty little race to solve, and seven runners to boot. Have to go with three here – Maid In Manhattan, improving, proven on the ground and stays well, Donnachies Girl, who looks likely to get an easy lead here, and the risky All My Love, who will like the ground and does try hard – it’s a question of whether she is fit after an absence (has run well once after a break).

2.25 – Maiden

Annie De Vega is all the rage in the betting but I thought this looked quite open. Damage Control looks the one likely to run his race – he has experience under his belt and should handle the ground, but both newcomers Favourite Moon and Crossing The Bar make a bit of appeal as well. Might be another jolly to try and take on.

2.55 – Nursery

Not too many that I liked here. Top of my list was Duke Of Condicote, a major eyecatcher at Goodwood last time out when tenderly handled (ran on nicely) and the sort Alan King should do well with, and Gallaside, proven with some cut at Nottingham and still improving. I did look at Sky Flyer as well, who has been gelded since his last effort and could easily turn into a different horse today, but unless this cuts up to seven, I’ll just stick with the two.

3.30 – 1m Handicap

Top of my list here was top weight Salt Whistle Bay, who goes with some cut and his record in the grade is pretty good (is 2-2 Grade 5 handicaps as far as I can see) and will find this a lot easier than some of the tasks he has been asked this term. Espresso Freddo will be popular after an easy win in bad ground last time but I’m not quite sure he’s up to the grade, and I’d rather row in with the consistent Quarry Beach and Pushmi Pullyu, who has to put some disappointing efforts behind her, but does now have her conditions.

4.00 – 1m Handicap

Eponina looks the obvious one under these conditions, missing her Leicester appointment to run here, and the hint should be taken. She ought to be bang there, and for the backup I’ll take Fitzrovia, starting to look better handicapped now and has C&D form in soft ground. Hopefully she can bounce back.

Today's selection – Brazen Point (e/w) 1.25 Nottingham
