Tracker Time

Was going to be just a couple for trackers this week, but after yesterday, I'm making it three….

Alcock And Brown (Milton Harris)

In his last six starts he’s either pulled up, or on the two occasions he has completed, has finished stone last. So why on earth should we bother putting him a tracker?

Wind back to 2018 and Alcock And Brown was winning off a mark of 122 in Class 3 company for the Skeltons (on good ground – important, that) and looked an improving handicapper. Clearly something then went wrong as we didn’t see the horse out again for well over a year, when he pulled up at Huntingdon and then did little better at Wincanton in December.

At that point the Skeltons sell him, and he’s picked up by Milton Harris. Four runs on soft/heavy since then (which he detests) have seen his mark fall through the floor, so much so that after another 5lb drop on Tuesday, he now qualifies for 0-100’s.

If there’s any ability left then we’ll find out once the ground dries up, and he’s on a mark to take a field apart. Mr Harris likes to land the odd touch too, so I suggest he goes in trackers, wait for 2m4f on good ground, and then watch the market…

The Wire Flyer (John Flint)

Wasn’t up to much on the Flat, rated just 45 and a place in a staying handicap at Wolverhampton was the highlight, but he’s shown enough over hurdles to think there’s a little race in him, especially once he gets dropped in grade (raced exclusively in Class 4s so far). Second at Ffos Las back in November was a decent effort, as was his sixth to Allart at Ludlow in January in a race that ought to throw up a few winners. He’s now dropping to a mark that’s a bit more workable than his original 112 and he could drop in at a price. Maybe 2m4f around somewhere like Hereford would suit, given he stayed 14f on the Flat fine.

Compass Point (Robyn Brisland)

Put him up as the selection yesterday and after some money for him in the morning markets, I expected a good run. However, he found himself run off his feet over 7f, for the first half of the contest anyway, after which he starts to make ground through the beaten ones and two out I thought he might hit a place. Then, he half runs out of room, and his jockey takes him back a bit, only for him to run on again into midfield late on. Quite an eyecatching run, I thought.

Maybe he needed this run but whatever, he clearly needs a mile now, and with that, I’ll stick him in and wait for him to go back up in trip.

Some cracking racing and big fields to contend with today. Strictly Art is on the Eyecatchers list and is worth one more try in the first at Huntingdon (1.00) after some reasonable efforts around here in November. Warwick's ground was probably too soft for him after that, and last week's run at Kempton looked like one to blow a few cobwebs away. I shan't be giving up on him yet, and Huntingdon's drying ground should be ideal.
