Good morning all,
Very quick post with a couple from the nursery at Goodwood last week that caught the eye in the paddock, then today's selection from Kempton. Hoping to keep this rather good run going!
4.10 Goodwood – Thursday
There were five I liked in the paddock in total. Two of them were towards the front of the market, unsurprisingly both of the joint favourites Barristan The Bold and More Than This were two of them. Both looked match fit and ready for this, and More Than This came out on top, battling on very well. A nice performance and he'll do better.
Back in fourth, Hieronymous was another I liked – in fact, he was just about my paddock pick. Not the biggest but strong, he stuck to the task well enough for fourth but lacked a gear at a key time. A step up to a mile will suit, but plenty will have seen this and he might not be much of a price.
But further down the field, put both Artistic Rifles and St Ouen in trackers. Both made plenty of appeal, particularly st Ouen, who was just about the rank outsider here but was one of the better looking ones on show. I had a few quid e/w on and although he wouldn't have won under any circumstances, he might have finished a bit nearer with a clear run. He's a lengthy, scopey type than looks a bit of a slow learner but this was slightly better, and another step forward (in lesser company, and possibly upped to a mile) could see him winning at a decent price.
Artistic Rifles is similarly a lovely, lengthy sort and will have taken time to fill his frame out. He's a half-brother to the useful Balty Boys, so 7f/1m should suit him fine. Not a lot went right for him here – he pulled a bit hard after being given the hurry-up out of the stalls, and then got a bit short of room late on, but it wasn't a terrible effort and back on a more conventional track, I think there's a race to be won with him soon as well.
On to Kempton tonight and the maiden at 6.40 looks a race I want to play. Nawar is the rightful favourite but quotes of 5-4 are short enough and at the prices, I'd rather take a punt at Cottingham at around the 7-1 mark. He's a full brother to the useful Integral, and there's plenty of other winners in the family. Like plenty from the Perratt yard, he was given time to find his feet on debut but he stayed on nicely at the business end, and he should improve plenty on that.
Today's selection – Cottingham 6.40 Kempton
Good luck with all your bets,
