Warwick Marathon!

Warwick for me today where there's an eight-race card to get through. I hope I'm on overtime after race six. (I won't be.) Had a look at the first six races on the card, and I might shove a couple of Colossus up between 10-11 if it's worthwhile.

Tomorrow's weekend video won't be up until late tonight as I'll do the cards when I get back this evening.

1.25 – 2m4f Novice Hurdle

The likes of Arcadio (in particular) and Mint Condition are both worth watching with a view to handicaps in mind, but with only the 7 runners this is not a race for heroics and the form of Lieutenant Rocco and Stick With Bill stand out from the rest. Both are proven in heavy ground as well, and with little between them on form, this does look one of the easier legs (he says).

2.00 – 2m Juvenile Hurdle

Has to be said that newcomer Go On Brycey Lad wouldn’t have to be anything special to make an impression here, as those with form all look vulnerable one way or another, and his pedigree makes plenty of appeal. The market will tell us what to expect.

With the ground a worry for Catch The Cuban and Scorched Earth, it might pay to concentrate on the top pair, Grand Roi and Manucci. Manucci really needs to learn how to settle and could improve a bundle if he does, but even so there’s no Goshen to worry about here (twice he’s come up against him) and he has a clear form chance. Grand Roi will like this track better than Fakenham, where he won but didn’t look all that comfortable.

2.30 – 2m4f Handicap Chase

Weak, and a field full of horses that don’t like winning races. 7 runners as well. Not fun.

After a very quiet spell Venetia is having winners again, so on that score alone, Little Ginge has to go in. Chase debut today too, so has potential for improvement. Vicenzo Mio has been given a chance by the handicapper but my God, he’s hard work. Ballyart has looked moderate and the visor needs to have an effect, and he looks slow to boot. Go Steady has yet to really prove this trip is what he wants, and maybe one of the bottom pair can improve a bit and hit the frame. Zoe Davison’s Glorious Boru looks the most likely, but frankly this race is a total guess-up.

3.00 – Jane Seymour Mares Hurdle (Grade 2)

Good little race. Where are we with the Honeyball horses at the moment? He had a golden spell where he could do no wrong but a few of his ran poorly at the weekend, and I’d be a little wary of his at present. With that, Deja Vue gets the heave-ho here.

Emma’s Joy’s second to Cill Anna here in December looks a good bit of form now, and she hacked up at Wetherby last time out. She has to go in, along with Vienna Court, impressive at Taunton and looking very much in need of a step up in trip, and I might chance Flow Away to reverse earlier form with Desaray Girl with a 5lb pull (and a longer trip, both of which help).

3.35 – 3m2f Handicap Hurdle

Push and shove stuff for the amateurs and conditionals, no whips to be used, and this will be attritional.

On saying that, there’s one I like here now it goes over a trip, and that’s Beau Haze. From a family that do nothing but stay, he’s been tried over shorter but you can expect a lot better now he goes up in trip. Should be a decent price too, and he’s the one horse I want to back on the early prices.

Kilcrea Bridge stays all day in bad ground and although he doesn’t win much, he often hits the frame. He’ll be plugging on when others have had enough. I like Mogestic too but the ground is a big worry.

4.10 – 3m Mares Chase

The Venetia angle leads me to Top And Drop with the first time cheekpieces on. She stays well and handles deep ground, so looks the first on the list. With Discretion is going backwards quickly, Midnight Tune is another will-she-or-won’t-she Honeyball horse (poor last time, cheekpieces now tried, will at least get a soft lead) and No No Juliet makes too many mistakes. So probably Molly Childers might be the back-up, although she was held when Alohamora presented her with the race at Catterick. Still, the handicapper leaves her on the same mark, which is fair.
