Hi all,
Inside today’s main I’m looking back at three nice looking juvenile fillies who ran last Saturday. Plus, there’s a couple of future winners for the tracker.
Fillies Catch The Eye
We’re getting to that stage in the season when plenty of nice juveniles are making their debuts. I think we saw three juvenile fillies who can be called nice prospects. The first two one their respective races and the final one finished a promising third.
Cherry Blossom
Cherry Blossom had been thrown in the deep end when winning a finishing 4th of 7 in a Naas Listed race on racecourse debut.
The filly who is clearly well regarded duly built on that promise with a comfortable success in a Curragh maiden (6f) on Saturday. S
he could go to the Lowther at York or wait for the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. By No Nay Never she’s a speedy filly and a smart one in the making.
Sea The Fire
Sea The Fire made a winning racecourse debut in the fillies maiden (7f) that opened Newmarket’s Saturday card.
By Sea The Stars out of smart mare Arabian Queen there’s plenty to like about her pedigree. The filly was more professional than most of her rivals on the day and, although the time was nothing special, she won decisively.
Her half-brother Spirit Mixer won over 1m 6f and finished runner-up in the Northumberland Plate (2m) but another two of her siblings have been better over shorter than a mile. I think she will be suited by a 1m+ going forward and could be an Oaks filly in the making.
Red Viburnum
Red Viburnum has clearly been showing plenty at home as she was set off 9/4 for her racecourse debut fillies juvenile race (7f) at the Curragh on Saturday.
The daughter of Frankel ran green when asked for her effort 1f out. Once the penny dropped, she picked up well and ran on well all the way to the line to finish a ½ length 3rd of 11.
I think she’ll improve plenty next time and is highly regarded, holding an entry in next month’s Group 1 Moyglare Stakes over C&D. On breeding she should be well suited by 1m 2f as 3-year-old but there’s a race to be won with her as a juvenile.
Future Winners
There are two future winners for the tracker this week. I mentioned the first of them in yesterday’s column. It’s Onesto who shaped with real promise when fourth in Sunday’s Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville. A mile is too short for the 4-year-old, and he will improve for the return to further. Runner-up in last year’s Irish Champion Stakes, and you would think that race will come under serious consideration once more. He looks set for a good autumn campaign.
Master Richard – Ann Duffield
The high point of Master Richard’s 3-year-old season came when finishing first past the post in a 3-year-old handicap (1m) at York’s Ebor Festival. He returned to action when winning at Newcastle in May before running poorly at York 13 days later. Off for 12 weeks he ran much better from the front when a ½ length 2nd of 9 to Gweedore in a Newmarket handicap (7f) on Saturday. Quick ground suit him in turf and he’s on a winnable mark.
Tuesday Preview
The race of the day is the Colwick Cup (Handicap) at Nottingham which is the feature race of a six race card.
Nottingham
4:00 – Quantum Leap made it 2-3 when beating six rivals on handicap debut at Haydock last month. Up 5lb for his Haydock success but that was an improved effort and with a well-run race he looks capable of an even bigger performance.
Newcastle
6:00 – If you prefer to handicap trainers rather than horses then here’s one for you. Andrew Balding is 7 winners from 12 runners 58% +14.49 9 placed 75% with his juveniles at Newcastle and he runs Star Runner in this 1m novice contest. The colt ran with promise when a 4 ½ length 3rd of 8 at Kempton 40 days ago. He’s closely related to three winners and the step up to a mile should suit.
Tuesday Selection:
I’m going to go with Quantum Leap as today’s selection, but I do like the Andrew Balding 2-year-old’s stats at Newcastle and that makes Star Runner of interest.
Nottingham
4:00 – Quantum Leap – 10/1 @ Bet365.
Good luck with your Tuesday bets.
