Grand National Thoughts

Good morning all,

We're just three days from the world’s most famous horse race. History has been written about the runners and riders who have gone onto success in the great race. The one thing they all share is an exciting combination of human effort and equine bravery.

From the triple-winning success of Red Rum, through to Aldaniti & Bob Champion and more recently double winning Tiger Roll, who sadly won’t be attempting the hat trick this year, there’s always a story to be told.

Granted the race isn’t the same as when the likes of Red Rum and Aldaniti were winning it. In 2013 several changes were made to the race to make the fences more ‘horse friendly’ and moving the start. However, I suspect for the casual viewer and the once-a-year punter they don't care about the changes. The thrilling spectacle of watching 40 runners, jump 30 fences over two circuits remains. Oh and that great feeling when you have picked the winner of the race.

Inside today’s main piece I’m going to look ahead to the National. Plus, I have an each way selection from Gowran Park.

Easter Monday Fancies

Good morning all,

This week the focus is once again firmly on jumps racing. There are two Grand National’s in the next five days. It’s the Irish version at Fairyhouse this afternoon and of course the worlds most famous horse race at Aintree on Saturday

It’s Easter Monday which means there’s plenty of good racing to enjoy. And terrestrial television viewers can watch the best of the action from Fairyhouse & Kempton in a nice race programme.

Inside today’s main piece, I have a few of interest at Fairyhouse & Kempton.

Southwell Selection

Good morning all,

The second stage of England’s Covid19 lockdown began on Monday and two owners per horse are now allowed on a racecourse for the first time since December. Aintree are hoping that six owners per horse will be allowed for the Grand National meeting.

In other Grand National news. Aintree racecourse could start watering later in the week. The going on Tuesday morning was officially described good to soft, good in places on both the National & Mildmay Courses. The weather is forecast to be mainly dry up to Grand National Day, a week on Saturday.

Plenty of good racing before Aintree. On Friday it’s the end of the all-weather season with All Weather Finals Day at Lingfield. Terrestrial TV viewers can enjoy six races from Lingfield and four from Newcastle on a bumper 10 race programme on ITV4.

On Saturday the ITV cameras switch to Haydock for the Challenger Series Finals over jumps and to Musselburgh for flat turf action with Betway Queen's Cup (Heritage Handicap) (3:35) the feature race of a seven-race card at the Scottish track.

Saturday also sees the day one of Fairyhouse’s Easter meeting which culminates on Easter Monday with the latest renewal of the Irish Grand National which wasn’t run last year because of the Covid19 pandemic.

Inside today’s short main piece, I have one horse to note for Friday's All-Weather Championship Day. Plus, a selection from Southwell.
