Daily Punt Home - Qatar Sussex Stakes

Qatar Sussex Stakes

Hi all,

The highlight of Day 2 at Glorious Goodwood is undoubtedly the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes (3:35). Additionally, the day features two Group 3 races: the Oak Tree Stakes (2:25) and the Molecomb Stakes (3:00). Meanwhile, over at the Galway Festival, the standout race on Day 3 is the highly competitive Galway Plate (7:10). Notably, owner JP McManus has a strong presence with favourite Perceval Legallois and the English challenger In Excelsis Deo.

Firstly, racegoers were blessed with perfect weather at Goodwood on Tuesday, which showcased the course beautifully under the sun. As a result, the ground continued to firm up, making it impossible for horses to come from behind in the early races. Consequently, there's a chance that Goodwood Clerk of the Course might water overnight, despite the possibilty of heavy thundery showers on Wednesday.

Kyprios delivered a standout performance, affirming his status as the world's best stayer with a comfortable three-length victory in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, breaking the course record in the process. This was not just a visually impressive display but also backed up by the clock.

Glorious Goodwood – Day 2

On Wednesday, it’s a seven-race card at Goodwood, with ITV Racing covering the first four races. Unfortunately, Rosallion has been withdrawn from the Qatar Sussex Stakes due to a respiratory infection, somewhat dampening the excitement around the race. Given the likely lack of early pace, it is possible that Ryan Moore might lead with Henry Longfellow, who could prove difficult to catch if the track rides similarly to Tuesday. I am also keen on the chances of last year’s runner-up, Facteur Cheval, who wasn't at his best in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

For those following trainer qualifiers from Tuesday’s column, there are three to note today.

I have already sent out my Tuesday preview to Victor Value subscribers and I have a few fancies at Goodwood and in the Galway Plate.

Good luck with your Wednesday bets.
