Rasen Rocks

Good morning all,

Late back from Newmarket last night thanks to motorway closures and the like, so it's with a slightly sleep-deprived body I haul myself up to Doncaster today. It'll be another busy day, and I always think the Donny crowd are a good punting crowd, even on event days like this. Perhaps it's because the lads and lasses there are brought up in households that teach their kids the important things when they're young, like never betting a round robin – have a trixie with bigger singles instead – so hopefully I'll be busy from start to finish today.

Newmarket was as expected – dreadful business at the beginning (we took £41 on the first race) but had built up by the time the last came around. Sadly, every man, woman and child wanted to be Frankie in his efforts to ride his 3000th winner in that race and he duly obliged, with the other jockeys helpfully letting Frankie set his own steady fractions to the cause. We were paying out for 15 minutes after the race, along with just about every other bookmaker on the track! Worse, it beat yesterday's selection, Palmerston, by half a length, just rubbing salt into the wounds….

So to today's racing. I have taken a look at a couple of races from Market Rasen, on their Rasen Rocks night (Jess Glynne again!)

Eyecatchers (Part 2)

Good morning all,

The second installment of my Eyecatchers is now ready for you to peruse, I hope you find it of some use.

Racing today isn't great, I'm afraid, but I do have a selection at Chepstow at the end of the piece that ought to be favourite, and isn't.

I'll do a round up of the Eyecatchers tomorrow and which ones we should be looking out for in the next few days.

Eyecatchers (Part 1)

Good morning all,

The racing for the next few days doesn't look the most exciting and I can't see me going anywhere for a day or two, so as promised, it gives me chance to start catching up on the Eyecatchers from the last few weeks. It's Newton Abbot and Uttoxeter today, and tomorrow I'll do a couple of Flat meetings from Pontefract and Doncaster, before a round-up of any others on Wednesday. I hope you enjoy reading them and there should be a winner or two for the future in amongst them.

Highs & Lows

Good morning all,

I think yesterday summed up the highs and lows of National Hunt racing perfectly!

Royal Macnab was the first to step up to the plate and for a few strides looked the winner in the home straight, as he took a couple of lengths out of favourite Ballykan turning for home but sadly couldn't hold him off and even when Ballykan once again started his party tricks at the last, couldn't take advantage, and ended up a gallant second.

But Molly's Gent jumped beautifully throughout and had his rivals cooked some way from home. Strolling to a 20-length victory as he approached the last, he winged that as he had done all the other fences….and then knuckled over.

I'm still trying to work out why that happened, as he jumped the fence perfectly well before the jockey came off, and I can only assume it was a tack problem. Bottom line, I didn't get paid, and it just made the misery of the day complete.
