This is a very tricky race where you could make a case for most of the runners. In that situation it is probably best to leave it alone. But, I can rarely leave alone a 3m+ handicap chase and had to have a go. The stats/trends for this don’t really help at all in truth so I haven’t really used them.

Al Co- well 25/1 appears big to my eyes. He is very well handicapped again and gets first time cheekpieces which may spark him into more life. He has the class and stamina to take this race. All race conditions look fine. Unlike a few in here he is usually a sound jumper also. Given he stays further I do hope they ride him aggressively and he either tracks the likes of Coologue, or tries to lead all the way himself. Team Bowen are in great form and at these odds I had to have a go. I am not sure if they want to run him in the Scottish National again, but if so he would need to win this I think to ensure he gets in.

Roc Dapsis – there are not too many trainers in better form than Tom George at the moment and Paddy Brennan, bar one Gold Cup mishap, has been on fire all year also. This one was an eye-catcher LTO. He was running on late that day and although it was through beaten horses I think it showed he had stamina that I wasn’t sure he possessed. He also clouted a few that day which did not help his cause. He is usually ridden more prominently, and held up around Aintree and Kempton is no place to be. I suspect Brennan will have him more forward and in a better position. He could still be open to progress, especially over this trip. There is a chance he doesn’t actually stay, but he has yet to prove he won’t. At 9s, happy to have a dart.

Little Jon – more of a speculative one in the sense that if he has an off day with his jumping it is ½ a point lost. But, he has the class and ability to win this , and win it well if he wanted. What caught my eye was that this is his first go at this kind of trip and his first go over a distance like this on a flat track. He has ran over 2m5f or so a few times, and on paper you would think he doesn’t stay. But, those runs have been around Cheltenham which he clearly struggles with and he is bred for this distance. The slower pace they may go here could help his jumping. Worth a dart.

PACE – well Coologue will be up there and may get a lead. Al Co won’t be too far away if sent forward and Roc D’Apsis will hopefully track the pace. They could be in the right place to pounce.

You could make a case for others in here but I will leave it there.
Good Luck,
Josh
