Musselburgh Selection

Good morning all,

Windsor was lost to the weather yesterday. However, hopefully some of you got on Glesga Gal who was a good winner for the Monday column at Wolverhampton.

Good news the Wi Fi works, indeed its better than at home. Inside today’s main piece I’m looking back at Sunday’s Irish 1,000 Guineas. Plus, I have a selection from this afternoon's meeting at Musselburgh.

Irish 1,000 Guineas

A pair of Aidan O’Brien trained fillies dominated the finish of this year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas. However, it was the lesser fancied of the pair Empress Josephine who came out on top.

Empress Josephine who came in for plenty of late money came with a late run down the outside to just deny stablemate Joan Of Arc.

No Speak Alexander took the field alongwith Joan Of Arc in a prominent position. The leader strode along nicely, albeit slightly over racing, and was only headed in the final half furlong by Joan of Arc who herself was collared late on by stringer stayer.

Belle Image a 94 rated filly coming into the race seemed to show much improved form to finish 4th.   She travelled as well as anything through the race. Sadly, for me she just snatched fourth from my each-way selection Fantasy Lady.

There were a couple of notable disappointments:

Pretty Gorgeous returned the 15/8 favourite travelled well for a long way but saw too much daylight wide on the outside.  Although she went well on soft ground as a juvenile, it was likely she also lacked race fitness on her seasonal return.

Fev Rover, third in the English 1,000 Guineas ran well below that form in 10th. She’s surely better than she was able to show here.

Miss Amulet can probably be forgiven this run. This was her first start for seven months and the ground would have been soft enough for her. She was a speedy juvenile and maybe better back over sprint trips.

What Next?

Given two of the leading fancies underperformed it’s hard to go overboard over the value of the form.

Empress Josephine will improve for stepping up to 1m 2f and could stay 1m 4f in time. It doesn’t like connections will aim her at the Oaks though.

Joan of Arccould stay further and the Prix Diane (French Oaks) could be on the agenda for her.

No Speak Alexander handled the testing ground well and she could now drop back to 7f for the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. That race could also be a target for fourth home Belle Image.

We’ll know more about where Pretty Gorgeous stands in the fillies pecking order next time.

Tuesday Racing

Again, not the most interesting of days from a betting perspective.

Musselburgh

2:20 – Cruyff Turn looked much improved when winning at Nottingham 18-days ago.  He’s up 5lb for that success but is open to more progress. Different track here but if he handles it can go close.
