Big Handicap Tips

The Newmarket July meeting is underway and today’s card features the Falmouth Stakes. Saturday’s feature race is the July Stakes but we will sidestep those two races and have a crack at the two big handicaps at the weekend – the Bunbury Cup from Newmarket and the John Smith’s Cup from York.

We begin with the Bunbury Cup and the last 8 renewals have all been won by horses in the 4yo to 6yo bracket.

3yo runners are 1-21 and older horses (7yo and older) are 3-43, although two of those wins were by Mine at the ages of 7 and 8. All bar 1 of the last 18 winners had previous winning form over 7f.

In fact horses without a win over this specialist trip are 1-105 since 1997. Read More »Big Handicap Tips

I hope you were on our Royal Ascot selections Solow, Bossy Guest and Dutch Connection earlier in the week. Today we take a look at the best bets on Friday’s card at the Royal Meeting and finish off with a crack at the ultra-competitive Wokingham handicap on Saturday.

Friday’s opener is the Albany Stakes, a 6f Group 3 race for fillies. Acapulco left a lasting impression in winning The Queen Mary and trainer Wesley Ward has another two solid chances in the Albany.

Laxfield Road bolted up over 5f on her only course start to date and it was 11 lengths to the runner up. This race is 6f (and a stiff 6f at that) but if she lasts it out she could be hard to catch. Whatever, happens she looks sure to give everything else a good tow into the race. Read More »Back at the Albany Ranch

Here's Nick…

It is Oaks day at Epsom I am going to look at the key trends for the opening race (the Princess Elizabeth Stakes) and then have a crack at the ultra-competitive Epsom Dash on Saturday.

We start with the Princess Elizabeth Stakes and there has only been one winner of this race at double figure odds since 1997. Since then the highest winning SP has been 7/1.

There have been no fewer than 9 winning favourites in the last 18 renewals and all bar one winner since came from the top four in the betting.

No 3yo has won since Kootenay in 2002 and 11 of the last 12 winners were aged either 4yo or 5yo.

A rating of 100+ looks essential and 46 horses have lined up here with an official rating smaller than 100 and not one of them has won.

All of the last 10 winners were rated 103+ and that looks as good a statistic as any. All that leads us to 108 rated Odeliz and 110 rated Lightning Thunder and it is the first named runner who I have backed.Read More »Epsom Tips from Dr Nick
